A wonderful place to stay located in the centre of the picturesque and cosmopolitan town of Cascais, on the Atlantic coast 30 km to the west of Lisbon
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONWhen you go through the gates of Casa da Pérgola you leave the bustle of modern life on the street outside and go back in time. The entrance through the small, colourful and beautifully kept garden leads to the elegant town house which has been in the family of the current owners since the turn of the last century. The architecture is typical of the period, richly embellished on the façade with friezes and mouldings in ornamental hand painted tile work. Inside, the decoration is sober and classical with a harmonious mix of styles and furniture which has been in the family for decades. Elegant black and white marble floors on the ground floor give way to polished wood with Portuguese and oriental rugs in the first-floor living room, with its imposing fireplace, comfortable sofas and interesting family portraits.
However, much of the charm of this property is due to its wonderful garden, with the pergola which gives its name to the house providing a shady spot in which to relax and enjoy a drink and a read. Al fresco breakfasts are served all year round providing a wonderful start to your day. The imposing house and its magnificent garden must be among the most photographed attractions of Cascais.
We are able to enjoy Casa da Pérgola today thanks to the family pride and enterprising spirit of Manuel Gonçalves and his daughter, Patricia, who have opened their doors to tourism in order to retain the spirit of that which, for them, is their family’s heritage. In the early twentieth century Patricia’s great grandfather bought the Casa da Pérgola and the adjoining house for his two daughters. Whilst the adjoining property was used more as a holiday retreat, and has since been sold, Patricia’s grandmother made the Casa da Pérgola her family home, and it therefore holds many family memories for Patricia and Manuel. In the 1980’s, following the death of his mother, Manuel decided to open the Casa da Pérgola for tourism, and Patricia’s specialised training and experience in the area of tourism ensured that the venture would be a success.
Visitors to the Casa da Pérgola will receive a warm welcome from Patricia and her father, and will be looked after with great care and professionalism. Manuel takes great pride and pleasure in his garden, which is carefully planned to provide colour and variety in all seasons.
